Report of the Director of Retirees Florida State Association of Letter Carriers 2011 Florida State Convention Having served in the position
of Director of Retirees for a complete term, I can honestly say that it has
been a pleasure working with the members of the Florida State Association and
its Executive Board. The position is quite a bit
more involved than simply assisting letter carriers with their retirement
questions and calculations. Presenting training sessions in various areas of
the State, as well as, spending many hours on the phone for those ready to
retire goes with the job. I have spent many hours assisting members with
their applications for disability retirement, and guiding them in their quest
to retire due to some type of disability. The Director of Retirees also
serves as Chairman of COLCPE, the Committee on Letter Carriers Political
Education. It has been a struggle to say the least, to get our members to
understand how important it is to be able to financially support our friends
in Congress. For some reason they cannot seem to grasp the concept that our
survival depends on those in Congress and without friends to vote in our
favor we face a difficult future...if we have one at all. There were 16,500 members in
the FSALC, as of April. There are 1,122 contributors to COLCPE. If that figure doesn't stun
you, nothing will! We all must renew our effort to sign up members and help
protect our future and the futures of our families. In addition to the monthly
conference calls held with State President Matty Rose, I have participated in
many of the State-wide district meetings and have attended each training
session sponsored by FSALC. I presented retirement training for our members
that was held at NALCREST, our retirement community located outside Lake
Wales and made many presentations on COLCPE. In addition to the busy
duties of the position I volunteered to sit on a Committee to audit the
financial transactions for FSALC. I have enjoyed serving the
Florida State Association of Letter Carriers in my capacity as Director of
