SAVE AMERICA’S POSTAL SERVICE- SAVE SATURDAY DELIVERY

September 27, 2011 many letter carriers joined together in solidarity to recognize those representatives who supported HR 1351. We were successful in getting many to sign on as co-sponsors. Now we must take our message back to the streets and get support to SAVE SATURDAY DELIVERY.

We must get our message to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. AKA the “Super Committee”. Our next campaign is to get congress to preserve six day delivery. President Rolando has ask each branch to collect “10 times its membership” size in petition signatures.

We have now until November 14, 2011 to collect the signatures and get them to Washington D.C.

It is time for all of us to fight to save the Postal Service. This is not someone else’s fight. We must take the petition   and ask our family members, neighbors, friends, co-workers, and anyone else who will listen to our message and have them sign in support to save Saturday delivery and Save America’s Postal Service.

Once you have collected all the signatures you can, mail the petitions to NALC national headquarters.

Open season for changing your health plan is November 14-December 12, 2011. Now is the time to compare our Union owned, Union run health plan with the others. Once you have done that I think you will find that our plan beats the others hands down. DARE TO COMPARE.

DISTRICT 3 REPORT

We have just completed our 71st Biennial Convention in St. Petersburg Fl. District 3 was represented well. The State officers met at 7 am on July 28, 2011 to discuss any final details before the convention began.

At 1 pm, the gavel sounded and the convention was called to order by President Rose. A newly revised Memorial Service was conducted acknowledging those members of the Florida State Association of Letter Carriers (FSALC), who have passed since we last gathered in assembly.  It was an excellent service and the committee was congratulated for their fine work.

Nominations of Officers and 2013 Host City for the next convention were conducted.  Those members from District 3 who ran and were successfulwere Dan Tegreeny Branch 1091, District3 Chairperson, Lynne Pendleton Branch 1091, Assistant Secretary, and Mike Clark Branch 2689, Treasurer. Congratulations to all. District 3 will be represented well at the State Level.

Guest Speakers on Thursday were Nicole Rhine, NALC Assistant Secretary Treasure. Sister Rhine spoke on national issues. Mike Williams, President of Florida AFL-CIO spoke to the delegates on local issues and the importance of working together.

The delegates were also shown the movie “The strike at 40” this movie celebrated the letter carriers who helped shape the future of the NALC when they participated in the postal strike.

There were proposed Bylaw changes for the FSALC, discussed on Thursday. This brought out a spirited discussion on the changes and after much discussion they were passed.

Friday morning the delegates were honored to have NALC National President Fred Rolando address the delegation. Many items were discussed, but a common theme shared was, we as letter carriers must get involved with our Representatives in Congress. We must tell them to support our issues.

The drawing for the Mary-Lou Jackman-William Corbeau Scholarship was conducted on Friday. Two names drawn are from District 3. Girls 1st winner was Joy Watson Branch 2689 and 2nd alternate Angelica Mejia Branch 1091. Congratulations to them both.

Friday afternoon the newly elected officers were installed and the convention was adjourned.
